Datalogger Orientation & Signal Strength: Why is signal stronger in some areas than others?

Vertical vs. Cross-Polarized Tower Coverage

Modern cell networks are transitioning from purely vertical antennas to cross-polarized systems (±45° slant) to improve performance for MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) technology.

  • Urban/Suburban areas: Cross-polarized (±45°) towers are common.
  • Rural areas: Many towers still use vertical polarization.
Even with cross-polarized antennas, vertical orientation still offers the best average signal performance.
